Passengers travelling within the US will no longer be able to carry spare lithium batteries in checked luggage on domestic flights, following a ruling from the US Transportation Dept.
The ban was introduced to reduce the chances of an overheated battery catching fire.
Lithium batteries are commonly used in lap-top computers, digital cameras and mobile phones.
The rule does however provide some flexibility, with passengers able to carry up to two spare batteries in sealable plastic bags or original packaging as part of their carry-on luggage.
The new condition came into effect from 01 Jan.
